Holding a garden with 7000 roses of 1000 varieties from around the world, “Garden Center” retailing rose plants, various trees and bedding plants as well as wide ranging gardening supplies, restaurant, coffee shop, and souvenir store on its premises of 30,000㎡, Keisei Rose Garden founded in 1959 is one of the leading rose gardens in Kanto area, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009.
Various sections are laid out within the rose garden allowing its visitors to see the roses from different angles. 400 varieties primarily consisting of modern roses are grown in their “Formal Style Garden”, whereas old roses and rose species are found in “Rose Valley” and “Rose Hill”. Rose species are also grown in the English styled “Natural Garden” with crooks and ponds often visited by water birds. Wildflowers and herbs bloom in “Sansaku-no-Mori (Forest for a Stroll)” all year round, and various types of events are held in “The Conservatory”. So this rose garden would have something to look forward to regardless of the season.
A walk through the garden will take you by surprise by the size of the roses. Unlike the typical ones that are waist-high, they are just as tall as the grownups. As Mr. Satoshi Murakami, manager of gardening department explains, it is the outcome of the effort made by the gardeners who simply wish to “present the roses of each varieties blooming at their best”. Those tall and richly branched roses grown with much care for each varieties bloom well and appear somewhat proud.
“Disneyland Rose Corner" featuring the Disneyland Rose and figures of Mickey and Minnie, marble gazebo produced by Yumi Katsura, and rose exhibition of the royal families make up a few of the garden’s specialties. The garden is characteristic of its variation in terrain, ranging from lowland to small hills, woods to grass, and the arches of roses laid out in many area add to the variety of scenes to enjoy.
Keisei Rose Nurseries is a globally renowned rose breeder, and it presents from one to three new breeds every year produced under the policy of making “roses that would match the culture and climate of Japan”. It also associates with the prominent breeders from overseas to introduce new varieties close to around 20. “New varieties are constantly introduced every year here in our garden at Keisei”, says Mr. Murakami. The garden is always a place to meet the unknown varieties and discover something new.
It is not just a favorite place for rose lovers. Joggers with annual passport would enjoy running in the garden every morning, and many families would visit the garden with their lunch baskets. It is also a favored dating and tourist spot for many. Being so closely located to the center of Tokyo, it is rich in nature, and is favored as a wedding venue and shooting location for fashion magazines. While presenting various entertaining events featuring roses, it is a location promoting different ways of enjoying roses and other plants.
